The ILUMINA project aims to access energy for local development and the emancipation of women in the province of Zambezia in Mozambique, the project was presented by the Italian NGO COSV and sponsored by AICS, the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development.
The project concerns 10 rural communities that will benefit from access to water for cultivation, which will thus be guaranteed even during the dry season. The fields will be irrigated with the drip system to minimize water waste.
Offgridsun supplied the photovoltaic modules, structures, panels and pumps necessary for the project, created the connection diagrams and technically supported our local partner in the installation.
Each system consists of 14 380 W FuturaSun FU380M Silk Pro photovoltaic modules and a submersible solar pump with integrated Nastec inverter with all the accessories for the correct functioning of the systems. The pumps are inserted into 50 m deep wells to fill 35 m3 tanks placed on a structure 7 m high, the water is finally distributed by gravity along the irrigation pipes. The pump turns on automatically when the sun rises and turns off when it sets, accumulating the water in the tanks. This system is capable of irrigating 1 hectare of land, including a sector of a quarter of a hectare at a time. The water accumulated in the tanks allows the farmer to use it at the most suitable times, generally in the evening or early morning, and allows the entire system to work without the use of batteries, thus making it economical and durable.
The project intends to reduce the dependence of agriculture on the seasonal rainfall and increase the food and economic security of the population involved and promote the economic independence of women who are the main sellers of agricultural products in local markets.
