In Liberia the national electricity grid is unreliable, subject to continuous and prolonged interruptions. For this reason, many production sites and offices are equipped with a diesel generator which compensates for network gaps. Even in Liberia, however, the price of petrol has risen significantly in recent times and therefore the owners of these buildings find themselves having to pay high costs to be able to work continuously.
To overcome the high costs of bills, a photovoltaic system can be installed that integrates with existing generators and thus creates a hybrid solar-diesel system. This solution adapts very well to all those industrial and commercial applications that see their main consumption during the day, so that solar energy can be exploited to the maximum. Given that in a system the greatest cost comes from the accumulation, with this type of system the high initial investment for batteries is avoided and at the same time the generators are used to a minimum, significantly reducing the monthly costs for electricity.
For this project in particular, 176.3 kW of photovoltaics were installed with Futurasun FU380SilkPro panels and 4 50 kW SMA Sunny Tripower CORE1 inverters, while two 350 kVA generators were already present. The project was studied and completed thanks to another Italian company, a leader in the construction sector in Liberia, which took care of the transport, customs clearance and installation of all the material, while OffgridSun took care of the simulations, the choice and order of the material and the commissioning of the inverters remotely.
The modules were mounted above the gable roof of the garage and on the flat roof of the main building with the modules positioned in an east-west direction and from summer 2022 the compound works by integrating solar electricity and energy from fossil fuels with savings estimated in terms of CO2 of approximately 135 tonnes/year.
