Program Overview

The Green Tanzania Cookstoves Program, developed by OffgridSun in collaboration with the Italian energy company Eni, aims at combating climate change by promoting the use of efficient cookstoves in rural Tanzania. The program improves health outcomes, reduces carbon emissions, and decreases deforestation by replacing traditional cooking methods with cleaner technologies. Additionally, it supports local production, creating jobs and boosting the economy. By 2030, the program will benefit 1 million people, producing 200,000 cookstoves locally, and reduce 2.6 million tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to global carbon neutrality goals.

As part of the broader Green Tanzania Cookstoves program, this role will contribute to the implementation of “Health and Energy” project an initiative designed to promote health, nutrition and sustainable energy consumption through the promotion of improved cookstoves and traditional food preparation. The project aims to improve community health and food security through culturally adapted educational activities such as cooking shows, developed with local and international chefs and nutritionists, while also increasing awareness of Eni’s Clean Cooking initiatives through international cultural projects and publications.

About the role

We are seeking a Local Food Specialist based in Dodoma Region-Tanzania who is going to report to theproject manager . He/she will collaborate closely with OffgridSun in the development of a country-specific nutrition profile and related activities. This position plays a key role in gathering critical culinary, cultural, and gastronomic information, and supporting the design and delivery of a high-profile cooking show/masterclass event.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working Group Participation and Country Profile Drafting: Participate in an working group to study the country’s gastronomy, local recipes, food chain, and food production systems. Contribute to the development of the country gastronomy profile , using local knowledge to inform the project. (remote work)
  • Site Visit Participation: Help organize and participate 2 weeks country visits (1 in July and 1 in November). Select locations (markets, farms, food production sites) to cover the gastronomic aspects of the country profile. (remote and in presence work)
  • Cooking Show/Masterclass Design: Support the team/project manager , and in particular in collaboration with the Lead Chef and Medical Nutritionist, in defining cooking show format according to the country profile and local traditions. Contribute to identifying cooking recipes and culinary best practices for the event. (remote work)
  • Identification of Cooking Show Venues: Help determine the most suitable locations for holding the cooking show, considering local context and traditions. (remote work)
  • Active Participation in Cooking Show: Engage in the cooking show event, providing food demonstrations and deliver awareness sessions alongside the Lead Chef. (in presence work)
  • Contribute in terms of contents before and after November’s mission in the realization of cultural projects related to the initiative, such as a publication. (remote work)

Requirements

  • Full proficiency in English and Swahili (both spoken and written).
  • Technical Skills: good use of laptops and Microsoft Teams.
  • Personal Skills: Deep understanding of the country’s food habits, culinary traditions, and their cultural significance, including ritual aspects. Good communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Educational Background: No specific educational requirements; experience and knowledge of local food traditions are more important.

Time Commitment

  • First Mission: Assessment site visit (end of July)
  • Second mission: Active participation in the cooking show event (end of November)
