Navigation has always fascinated man and never before has the fragility of our marine ecosystems been truly understood as in this historical moment. Reducing the impact of fuel engines will be one of the great challenges of the coming years to reduce sea acidification.
This is why OffgridSun participated as a technical partner in the inclusion and sustainability project by Marco Rossato and Igor Maceraci “GIRO D’ITALIA A VELA – SAILING BEYOND THE LIMITS” installing photovoltaic panels for sailboats
Marco and Igor, both part of the group “I timonieri sbandati” have as their mission to raise awareness of accessibility to ports for the disabled and to monitor the state of health of our sea, in collaboration with the Marevivo Association. Having a passion for sailing, they face various difficulties in boarding and disembarking operations given the inadequacy of facilities for people with disabilities and are disconcerted by the increase in plastic at sea in recent years.
They then conceived the project of circumnavigating Italy to leave the message that no one should give up their dreams and to raise a cry of alarm about the state of our seas.
The two protagonists, for their mission on board the “Tornavento” boat, chose to use only renewable sources, eliminating any type of fuel and gas.
Thanks to the photovoltaic system for boats provided by OffgridSun consisting of four modules photovoltaics, a 5 kWh lithium battery and an OPTOR 3K-HP1 inverter, it was possible to completely electrify all the on-board instrumentation and power the electric motor which contributed to the thrust of the boat for more than 30% of the trip. The four semi-flexible photovoltaic modules, specially produced for the project, allowed the battery to be recharged quickly while the boat was sailing.
During the days of bad weather and downtime in the dock, the OPTOR inverter was able to accept the electricity grid for an emergency battery recharge, before setting sail again.
