Carbon Credit Purchase

Purchase of Certified carbon credits for companies

Carbon credits are purchased by companies that have set emission reduction targets to offset a portion of their emissions. Purchasing carbon credits now represents a concrete and verifiable lever to contribute to climate neutrality.

Although initially a voluntary market, the certified carbon credit market is increasingly becoming a system regulated by specific regulations, allowing its use even in mandatory markets.

Who can buy carbon credits?

Purchasing carbon credits is now strategic for companies in every sector, particularly:

  • Energy companies
  • Aviation sector (airlines, airports)

Reference regulations for the purchase of carbon credits

Aviation sector – CORSIA

The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) introduced the CORSIA – Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation program, which will become mandatory from 2027 for 134 countries. This mechanism requires airlines to purchase certified carbon credits, such as those generated by OffgridSun projects, to keep emissions below 2019 levels.

Paris Agreement – Article 6

Article 6 provides for the use of certified carbon credits validated by the host country through a “Letter of Authorization.” OffgridSun is among the first players to have obtained government approval in Tanzania to certify projects under the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM).

European Union – Directive 2024/825/EU

This directive, “Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition,” prohibits greenwashing practices and mandates the use of certified methodologies for emissions offsetting. Only carbon credits certified by third parties and traceable can be claimed for sustainability purposes.

German Regulation

Germany has established that credits generated abroad may be used for up to 3% of total emissions. This approach will also influence future EU climate targets for 2040.
