How does a street light work?

The solar street light is an ideal solution to provide lighting in areas where expanding the electrical grid would be too difficult and costly.

The solar street lights are undoubtedly essential for all the intersections and crossroads. In this places, indeed, it is necessary to grant the maximal visibility during the night.
Out-of-town intersections, being far away from the existing electrical grid, are often in the dark. Set up underground or air electrical lines are extremely costly and very complicated from an administrative point of view.

The solar street light, tested since many years, is able to solve all these issues. Modern LEDs  grant an excellent light quality, low consumption and a very long lifespan.

Moreover, the solar panels failing prices benefited to this product, which became very affordable. It is now possible to get a complete solution for a few hunderd euros.

How it is made?

The street light include batteries, normally installed at the top of the pole, to prevent any rob or vandalism attempt. During the day, the solar panels charge these batteries.
The 45° inclination of modules grants a good efficiency of the system during winter. During this period the sun is lower and there is less light during the day. In summer, instead, there is enough sun and the extra-light even make the whole system a little bit over-sized.

In our solar street light Lightwave, the solar panels, on top of charging the batteries, also work as sun sensors turning on and off automatically the system when needed: when there is no current it means the the night came and the solar street light turns on.

The core of the Lightwave system is ATON: an ad hoc charge regulator developped by OffgridSun which optimize the battery discharge, preventing the battery from an over-discharge, and thus protecting its lifespan.
